Handmade Plane Cutters by Jim Reed
13 April 2007
I make plane cutters that are better than the originals. They have better steel and they are harder. I ship them sharper and because they are harder, they hold their edge longer. You cannot find a higher quality cutter for your antique plane.
I start with high carbon industrial grade MADE IN USA steel. It is expertly ground, milled and filled according to close tolerances. Hardening and tempering is done by a professional heat treater according to tested cabinetmaker specifications. My sharpening process uses waterwheels and cool quench methods to maintain hardness. Each cutter requires over a dozen manufacturing steps and each cutter is inspected at each step. The resulting products are given a final inspection and then carefully wrapped for shipment.

Here are some pictures of the Hamler cutter sets. I have sets ready to
ship and also do a blade of the month club. Seven payments of $24.99 gets you a
Hamler each month and a free storage case also. What a deal! Is this a great
country or what!
General Product Availability
I work full time in information technology, but in my spare time I like to make cutters for myself and other galoots who insist on using obsolete planes.
There are not many of us around and the demand for cutters is so low that I keep few products in stock. For some items five products is a ten year’s
supply. Most orders require a lead time of sixty to ninety days, depending on the weather, my mood, and other hard to predict factors.
I do not require down payments and full payment is expected only at the time of shipping.
Custom Blades and Cutters
Prices for custom cutters can be quoted on request. Prices are modest and depend mostly on labor. Many custom cutters can be had for less
than $30 each. Please send note and/or sketch. Custom orders are generally filled within 90 days.
Ordering Information
Pricing is subject to change without notice.
Shipping
Cost of shipping to any USA location is included in the pricing. International customers please inquire.
Payment
Payment can be made thru PayPal to jimreed2160@msn.com. I also accept MO, checks, cash and anything else you can talk me into.
Guarantee
I started making cutters because I was a woodworker who was frustrated when I could not find quality cutters to use in planes.
Numerous user testimonials attest to the quality of these products. Accordingly, all products have a satisfaction guarantee.
Woodworking should be fun—if you are not happy with any product, send it back for replacement or refund.
Enjoy your time in the shop making shavings and do not pass up any opportunity to start someone down the *slippery slope* of plane collecting.
