when I got an email with the pictures of this one I thought it was the smaller 8" jaw size...so much for scale when there's nothing but the one thing in the frame. Not quite pleasantly surprised when I got to the basement and found this monster, almost left it behind....almost. One thing I've learned is never assume anything will be there upon your return.

Managed to manhandle it out of the basement, up the stairs around the house and into my trunk:

nice solid vice with excellent bones
just needs some TLC and some paint stripper

only one apology..the screw sleeve has a small chip out of the end

The break down
managed to dis-assemble it in my trunk and get it up the stairs to my store, a major feat in itself:
but stripped to it's component parts it's a lot easier to maneuver and clean
should be an interesting winter project, probably be ready for the spring LFOD auction

everything is correct and solid, no casting cracks or missing parts (except the tilt adjust bracket-and I have a cad drawing for that)

next up....the paint strip down...
going good...be done before Christmas with any luck
still haven't decided on a color yet...probably black, but there was silver on the vice as a first coat...
so many layers of paint on the jaws....
\
the paint job...looks pretty good
and all the bits and pieces are clean...
still have to grease the parts that need it
now if I can just remember how to put it back together....
next...the re-assembly
here we go:
first..run the spindle through the collar, then the taper adjuster handle plate and the beam...insert all through the front jaw plate, then loosely fitted the back jaw for support
I screwed the collar onto the beam slightly to hold it all together and then tightened down the two large set screws through the jaw face into the beam
then proceeded to tighten down the collar leaving just enough play for the tilt adjusting mechanism to work properly and tightened the set screw
I then slid the stop collar onto the screw and tightened that down (not shown-sorry)...then, slid the hub onto the beam...
now it was time for the screw nut, rotating the spindle I drew the nut close to the hub
leave a little slack so you can line up the screw holes
then tighten down the nut cover
almost done...time for the rotate adjusting handle assembly, it slid in easily...have to find the tilt adjusting bar...it's around here somewhere...and I still have to fabricate a bracket...
and the final touch of the dogs...they're a little tight but should work in fine and I guess I'll have to do some touch up painting
may have to make a new handle too, the old one is solid but a little ratty
now, if I can handle it, I just may have to mount this to my bench...
but first I'll have to dis-assemble it again to get it back to the shop...
