In 1867 the Auburn Metallic Plane Company was established by Elliot G Storke

certainly the most involved plane mechanism ever

here's the lateral (bottom lever)

and here's the kicker...

this lever sets the frog into position also holding the blade in place

also has an adjustable mouth

The adjustable throat design with swiveling lever cap was a November 28th 1871 patent granted to
S.W. Palmer and Storke and assigned to William J. Moses

The corrugated sole was an Auburn innovation; the patent was granted to Elliot G. Storke on October 19, 1869..
patent number 96,052. The corrugations were designed to reduce friction in use. Stanley did not use this feature until 1898

At one point in history the Metallic Plane Company was Stanley's largest competitor...circa 1860's through 1870's. Stanley beat them out in marketing and pricing. The death of Elliot Storke in 1879 signaled the end of the Auburn Plane company and the company had ceased operations by 1880.
